The 50% League: What we're not
We’re not saying that everyone should give 50%
50% is simply a catchy (and arbitrary) amount that gets people's attention. We ARE encouraging people (especially those with discretionary financial resources) to figure out how much is enough and to creatively engage their financial surplus in making a better world.
That “surplus” could be 1% or 99% – that’s for each of us to determine.
We are not out to brag, guilt-trip, or be holier than thou
Most of us gave quietly. For many, this is our first time being public. We respect each person’s choices. We are here to encourage those who want to give more. We are not trying to convince the disinterested.
We are not telling people where to give
That is up to each giver. The 50% League and Bolder Giving is seeking to include people with a wide range of income sources, amounts of wealth, values, and giving interests. We value a range of perspectives.
We are not about giving money “away”
We are about supporting the thoughtful, creative, effective investment of money, talent, and love towards global and community concerns. We can help you determine how much you can give and connect you to resources to help you give it well.
We are not competing for business with others promoting philanthropy
We are here simply to fill a key niche that is missing within philanthropy. Where else can people fully explore how much they can give? Where can they find peers to talk about giving far beyond the norm?
The League requires no dues or fees or even participation beyond contributing one’s story. Our intention is to collaborate closely with existing wealth networks and philanthropic advisors, and to refer people to the extensive philanthropic resources that exist.
We are not all mega-wealthy
Many of us would be considered simply affluent, and some just middle class.
